NetNews of May 2nd 2000. Integration of nicewww and home in the new Web Services. On May 10th, 2000 the nicewww.cern.ch and home.cern.ch servers will be merged in the central web services. All web sites that were accessible using the sintax http://home.cern.ch/foobar or http://nicewww.cern.ch/foobar will be handled by the central web services and will be redirect to http://foobar.home.cern.ch/foobar (same URL *independent* from the physical location of the web site that can be stored on AFS or NICE or on the Central web servers), "foobar.home.cern.ch" being an alias (CNAME) of the server hosting the "foobar" personal web site. The old syntax http://home.cern.ch/foobar or http://nicewww.cern.ch/foobar will still work, ensuring the backward compatibility with existing html links or bookmarks. From the 10th of May, the name of the server "home" or "nicewww" can be omitted or replaced by "www" when specifying the URL of a personal web site. Example: The site http://home.cern.ch/marc or http://nicewww.cern.ch/marc will be accessible also as http://www.cern.ch/marc or http://cern.ch/marc and in all cases, it will be redirected to http://marc.home.cern.ch/marc After May 10th, there will be no longer an automated web site created with every NICE and AFS account. Users willing to have a personal web site (to share documents, to access their home directory from the internet,...), will have to register it at http://cern.ch/webregister. The registration form allows to chose where to have the personal web site stored (AFS, NICE or Central Web Servers). At the address http://cern.ch/webr/View_Database.htm end-users can review the web sites they own, delete unused entries or create new ones. The Web Services team - www.support@cern.ch
